Armchair Travel: Sleep under the Stars

Published: May 23 2020

From deserted beaches to safari hide-outs, here are 6 of our favourite destinations for sleeping under the stars. We can’t 100% guarantee romance, but we’re pretty certain it will be an unforgettable adventure!

1. LION SANDS GAME RESERVE - South Africa

An incredibly luxurious sleep-out experience at the only private sanctuary rooted in between the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park, This wonderful game reserve is just an hour’s flight from Johannesburg or two hours from Cape Town, in the Mpumalanga province. Sleep out in the Kingston Treehouse built on a rocky outcrop and marvel at the night sky with zero light pollution, and your own front row seat when the animals congregate at the watering hole at night – not to mention the gourmet picnic illuminated by lanterns, feather beds and a rain shower with a view. Romance at no extra cost!

2. AMILLA FUSHI - Baa Atoll, Maldives

Book one of the Skyhouses at Amilla Fushi and you get your very own Bubble to sleep out in and stargaze from! The Skyhouses launched at the resort last year and are treehouse-style one or two bed lodgings, suspended 12 metres above the ground amongst lush palms with their own private infinity pools. Accessed from inside, the Bubble is complete with rotating daybed, a Bang & Olufsen sound-system and its own telescope. Great for couples seeking total privacy or the larger Skyhouses can accommodate families with up to four children.

3. SOUTH LUANGWA - Zambia

There’s no shortage of dramatic and fascinating topography at this stunning game-rich park in eastern Zambia, which lies between 500 and 800 metres above sea level. For the ultimate safari experience, book in for the signature ‘Sleep-out under the Stars’ experience. Fall asleep under a canopy of thousands of twinkling stars on your cosy bedroll, listening to the chorus of the African bush at night-time. The best time of year for this unique experience is between May and October.

4. MORUKURU - South Africa

Madikwe Game Reserve is the fifth largest game reserve in South Africa comprising of 75 000 hectares of pristine, malaria-free bushveld located in the North West Province, just a four hour drive from Johannesburg or a one hour flight. It is also still one of the lesser known parks in South Africa, which makes it a real hidden gem. Spend a night in the wild during your stay at the Hide, set on the banks of the Mariko River and protected by an electric fence. Whether for family members and friends or for a couple, the experience of being so close to the roaming wildlife and African wilderness is not to be missed.

5. AMANGIRI - Utah

The Amān group unites a collection of intimate, luxurious retreats resembling private homes, always at the forefront of beautiful aesthetics and holistic experiences. Amangiri, set amidst the breath-taking scenery between Monument Point and the Grand Canyon in South Utah, opens its new Camp Sakira tented accommodation on 1st July this year. Raft through the Marble Canyon, soar above red rock country in a helicopter, dine atop Tower Butte overlooking the iconic Lake Powell before retreating to your Girijaala Suite. The inside scoop is that it’s perfectly acceptable to ask the hotel staff for marshmallows to roast over the firepit whilst you’re stargazing!

6. KINONDO KWETU, GALU BEACH - Kenya

Kinondo Kwetu is a family-run boutique beach lodge on a tranquil 16 acre plot south on Galu Beach in Kenya. Tucked between a rocky cliff and a sacred forest, this intimate hotel is often described as a ‘home away from home’ and is the perfect place to kick back after a safari. A range of rooms, suites and a private villa means there are plenty of options for families or couples. With no fixed dining area, you can enjoy your locally sourced lunch under a shady palm tree on the beach, and later enjoy an exquisite dinner under the moonlit sky, complete with your very own sleep-out with the sea lapping at your feet.
